My Students

Can you imagine learning how to count and trade coins by simply watching someone else do it? This is a problem that my students face every time we have a math lesson dealing with money.

My first grade students are excited and energetic about learning!

They love hands on activities and are very inquisitive. They are happy to be at school and happy to be learning. I teach at a large charter school which serves mainly students from lower incomes. With class sizes swelling and the state making cutbacks in spending, appropriate classroom materials are hard to come by. Teachers often spend much of their own money on much needed supplies for the classroom.

My Project

My class currently has one teacher display set of coins with which I demonstrate counting and trading money. It is suggested through our current curriculum that each student bring in actual coins from home to use with these lessons. Asking my students to bring in 100 pennies, 60 dimes, etc. is an actual hardship for most of the families in my classes. If we had durable plastic sets of coins for each individual student, they would be able to sort, count, and trade their own coins instead of watching me or another student demonstrate it for them. Children at this age are still very tactile learners and so giving them the chance to practice these skills in a hands on manner is vital to their learning process. In addition to the coin sets, the bingo games and math books would provide other interesting avenues for students to practice the skills of counting and sorting money.

Can you please help my first graders effectively learn the essential skills of counting and trading money?
