My Students

Our school is for students with special needs who, because of severe emotional and behavioral issues, have not been able to learn successfully at their regular schools. They learn a little bit differently, are a little more difficult to engage due to their tremendous emotional needs and we work hard to be able to accommodate their differences, correct their behaviors with gentle guidance and keep them in school and in class!

Our school provides a safe place where students can make mistakes, learn coping skills and master problem-solving strategies while continuing to be exposed to the district-wide academic curriculum.

Instead of being suspended or removed from the learning environment for extended parts of the day - which is what was happening in their regular schools- our daily goal is to keep students in the learning environment where they can get their academic needs met. The ultimate goal is to give them the coping strategies they need to be able to be successful back at their home schools. In the meantime, we strive to give them the kind of high-quality lessons and activities that will authentically engage them in rigorous learning.

My Project

We are requesting Play Money Bills and Coins so that we can practice making the proper change. We are asking for several board games about money like: Monopoly, Payday, Moneywise Kids, Networth, Cashflow and Exact Change! These games will help the students learn about finance and budgeting in a fun and easy way. Students love to play games and we have their attention when we talk about money! We do not have to convince students that learning about money and making proper change is an important lesson! It can be challenging for many, though, and these games are going to make a huge difference from helping them to learn the basics of making change to understanding the importance of budgeting and managing credit! So many of our students live in very low-income households and are subject to the financial traps and pitfalls that accompany that - from rip-off check-cashing stores to super-high interest furniture and electronic rentals - these games and the learning that goes with them are going to open the eyes of our students so that they can avoid falling prey to bad financial practices in the future. These board games are a great way for our students to start to discover all the things they need to know about successfully tackling their financial futures.
