Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the days of growing up when lay-away was an option or having to save for months to get something you really wanted? Now, credit and debt are running rampant. I want my students to buck the trend of our growing debt problem by learning what it means to earn, save, and spend wisely.

I have a culturally and economically diverse group of students, but the commonalities they all share and what I am most proud of are their great hearts and passion for learning.

They treat each other with respect, are sensitive to each others' differences, and appreciate each others' individuality. My students are also inquisitive and so curious about their world. They are information seekers; They ponder over books to find the answers to their questions. Often their answered questions lead to even more questioning and they love to share their findings with others. They are my inspiration! :)

My Project

The resources I am requesting will be used to develop my students' understanding of financial literacy through the integration of engineering activities and technology. Students will first be introduced to the concept of money-earning, spending, and saving through literature. We will read text both in print and using the tablets for online access, to gain a better understanding of financial earnings and responsibilities. Students will get to apply their understanding by being able to earn "money" to spend on materials to complete an engineering design challenge. For two weeks, students will get their earnings by completing homework, turning in work, etc. QR codes will be created and the tablets used to scan and keep track of the money earned and later spent and saved in the challenge. Students will work in teams to complete a design challenge by purchasing materials with the money earned collectively. Students will also be encouraged to save some of their earnings as a bonus criteria.

This project is so important because children have had such poor leadership when it comes to money and finances.

They are growing up in a world of financial crisis and will one day carry the burden of our debt on their shoulders. Therefore, it is important for children to learn about economics at a young age in order for them to make wise decisions about the money they earn in the future. What better way to make financially literate students than through the integration of a STEM challenge!
