"Money doesn't grow on trees!" This is an expression that most children have heard, yet they don't fully understand the meaning of it. This is why teaching students financial literacy at a young age is so important.
My school serves an international community in New York City and we are in one of the most diverse areas in the United States.
Our students and their families see our school as the opportunity to future success, and therefore education is considered a top priority.
I teach 4th grade students who are eager and willing to learn. Their thirst for knowledge goes beyond the standard textbooks as they seek out real-world problems and solutions. I am constantly looking for new creative ways to engage their curiosity and love of learning. I also believe that it is never too early to learn the value of a dollar and to understand that every penny counts.
My Project
With these board games, such as "Life", "Monopoly," and the "Allowance Game", my students will have fun managing their money and negotiating property deals, whilst learning important skills such as time management and problem-solving. They will have to use basic math computing skills in order to advance. They will have to learn patience and cooperation as each student gets a turn rolling the dice. In order to keep the pace even and fair for all, each group will have a sand timer to move the game along. These games will be used throughout the year to encourage continuous financial literacy.
Financial literacy is a skill that needs to be developed early on in life.
These games will help my students prepare for the future - not just getting through financial topics in math class, but teaching them life skills so that they can grow up to be informative and responsible citizens.
