My Students

My art room is a creative center for Pre-K through 5th grade students at one of the largest elementary schools in our public school district. Since I teach a wide range of ages, I have multiple instructional approaches, which includes younger students sitting for whole group instruction before going to their tables to create.

Some of my youngest students are only 3 years old, and need a comfortable and collaborative space where I can facilitate instruction, integrate art related stories and present visual content.

My students are eager artists that love learning about new artists and techniques. They continually problem solve, preserving through mistakes, and demonstrate their learning to their peers for support!

My Project

A carpet for the Art Room? You may think this is an odd request. But for very young artists, a carpet provides a gathering place for close group instruction, where I can show digital presentations, artistic demonstrations from my document camera, and read art related stories to inspire a lesson. When young students sit at their tables first, they can easily get distracted by the art tools and materials at their tables and miss important instructions.

Students will also benefit from being in close proximity with the teacher, so that they can see the pictures in my book, the careful steps of a pinch pot and easily participate in a group game; which will engage and motivate young learners.
