My students are part of a program that gives children from all cultures, areas, and incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive within the district. Flexible seating allows students to independently make choices that work best for them. During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Being that PreK3 is often an entry point for many students starting their schooling, it is also where families and educators may observe and begin early intervention, especially for students who may have suspected or diagnosed special needs. For this reason, we need to make the PreK3 environment adaptive and open-access for all.
While we have variety, we hope to further develop flexible seating with occupational therapy and adaptive-friendly options in mind.
Children are more engaged and more willing to learn when they feel more comfortable, accepted, and safe in their learning environment. The modular seating that I have in mind will provide my students with additional seating options that can be adapted to suit various physical needs. It also has the bonus of being formatted into different types of play. A boon for extreme weather days when recess has to be indoors.
