My Students

SDHS is situated among the blue mountains and beautiful valleys of VA. We are small town - the school consisting of about 700 students. The lifestyle is more simplistic, traditional, and family-oriented. The students are eager to discuss important topics, but often apathetic when it comes to the classics, since they fail to see the connection between it and their real lives. However, the school has very low funding when it comes to updating the curriculum. Still, to excite these students, teachers need more applicable literature, more modern titles.

This project will help in two different grade levels - 11th and 12th.

These students are more mature than their underclassmen, as they have found social circles for the most part, and are now ready to plan their futures and understand the type of people they want to be. They are eager to know themselves better, and to discuss the problems of our world - issues with mental health, racial tensions, social hierarchies, etc. These kids want to understand why 'normal' is normal, and why they are being pushed to act a certain way and believe certain 'truths.' They aren't necessarily rebellious, just innovative and reflective.

My Project

"Honestly, how many of the books I assigned this year did you read?" asked Mrs. W.

The responses echoed back from the 30 honors 11th graders:

"Just The Glass Castle." "Two." "None, really." "I read a page here and there."

Reading sparknotes, listening to their teachers read, and hearing summaries in class discussions do not improve student skill. Instead, students need to read - actively and fully. One way to encourage closer reading is through texts more relatable and engaging - to better create 'buy in.' Thus, students will build close reading skill, stamina, critical thinking, and a stronger understanding of the world.

Three of the novels will be used for class study - as students will read them, so to best discuss the techniques of the writer and the messages in connection with our society. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, Mark Haddon creates a moving story about love and bravery through the eyes of a British autistic boy. Foer's writing in Everything is Illuminated showcases the beauty of clever techniques in the written word, as he weaves an episodic adventure showcasing what happens when different cultures try to understand each other. Finally, Kidd creates unforgettable voices in The Invention of Wings in telling a story loosely based on the American Sarah Grimke - and portraying the mistreatment of slaves, not only socially and physically, but mentally, as well.

The other titles will be used in lit circles - giving students more choice when it comes to what they read in American Lit class. With choice comes ownership, therefore a stronger motivation to study and develop individualized perspectives.

Overall, the goal is to build authentic reading - not just completion of assignments and prep for standardized tests, but intellectual study, discussion, and world reflection.
