This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an English as a Second Language (ESL) / English as a New Language (ENL) teacher at two small high schools in Manhattan. I work with a group of 60 students in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade.

My students are from countries such as Yemen, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, Russia, Albania, Bangladesh, Senegal and Mali and are are very motivated to improve their command of the English language.

Many of these students have been in the country for fewer than 5 years and require intensive support in their English language acquisition journey.

My Project

My current laptop is more than 5 years old and unable to effectively run multiple online platforms and programs at once. A new Macbook will enable my students to access their English as a New Language lessons and content through the most up-to-date technology.

With a modern laptop, I will be able to create, launch and monitor differentiated lessons, utilizing platforms such as Nearpod and Pear Deck, which incorporate video, audio and interactive technologies that will foster my students' English language acquisition.

In addition, I will be able to access multiple platforms to host live, virtual meetings, essential to building community in my remote classroom.
