Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a teacher of primarily Hispanic English Language Learners who are reading more than three grades below their expected level, I am committed to fostering a love of reading by building a modern, culturally relevant classroom library. My goal is to provide a diverse collection of books that cater to all reading levels, interests, and backgrounds - ensuring every student can find a text that either excites them, empowers them, opens their eyes to new experiences, or, preferably, all three!
In my classroom, students are expected to read daily, choosing books that spark their curiosity and build their confidence as readers.
However, access to books for low-income students remains a challenge. Research shows that the number of books in a child's home is the strongest predictor of academic success - yet 61% of low-income children in America grow up without them. By creating a well-stocked, inclusive classroom library, I can help bridge the gap and provide students with the tools they need to thrive.
