I teach in a school where my students are eager to learn but I feel we do not have any books that speak to them. I want my students to become better readers and by providing them with more contemporary books I feel I can get them hooked on reading and improve their literacy levels.
I work in an inner-city school where my students have very little money to spend on school supplies.
The books we have in our school do not reflect the interests and lives of our diverse students because our students have trouble relating to the characters and plots, and thus, see no reason to read. Our students also struggle with reading and many are not on grade-level, so a goal is to help our students become better readers by providing them with books that they can relate to and that contain more contemporary, exciting plots.
My Project
Our goal is to use these books during our seventh grade novel studies in order to help our students with reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, and even a novel-to-film comparison study. I also want to use these books as a launchpad for our students to become addicted to reading, and I hope they show are students that there are fun books out there they can relate to.
In a school where the majority of our students say they do not read on their own and do not care to become better readers, the best thing we can do is put an interesting book in their hands and get them addicted to reading.
By providing books that our students will more readily identify with, I fell my students can become life-long readers and read books for enjoyment as well as the academic benefits.
