Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach science at all levels from non-native language speakers to those enrolled in AP science courses at an inner-city school in Texas. The majority of my students are Hispanic and will be the first in their family to attend a university after graduation. My passion is to build strong relationships with my students that last for a lifetime. This four-year process begins by first reaching their hearts and second, to hook their minds in a grand journey that teaches them to be empowered, tenacious, and lifelong learners and to become excited about the life that awaits them after their post-secondary degrees. I arrive at school at 6:00 AM each day and by 7:00 AM my students are in my room ready for tutoring, independent biomedical research projects and to build strong relationships with their peers. In education, many of my students are classified as "at risk." Over the past thirty years in education, I would say that they are amazing and full of curiosity, willing and extremely able to reach the lofty goals that they have set for themselves.

My Project

Biomedical research students study the PTF-L complex by performing structural modeling, over-expression and purification of the heterotrimeric complex composed of Ptf1a, E12 and RBPJ. The outcome of the student research project is to determine the protein/DNA structure of the PTF-L complex. Students will generate a research poster including, an abstract, data, data analysis, conclusions, and future directions. Biomedical research students will generate and present their research in the open poster session at the annual American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Conference. This unique program allows enthusiastic students to perform hands-on experiments in protein chemistry, structural biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology.
