My Students

Art as a primary source document for analysis? Sculpture that demonstrates newly created knowledge? Is there a way to give art homework in the form of sculpture and painting assignments? The good news is that the answer is YES!

I teach in a New York City public school that is located in the borough of Queens.

We are known as a microcosm of the world and our population is one of the most diverse in the nation. That is a source of pride for us as we host an international school community speaking many languages and representing many cultures. We are a rich mosaic of many traditions and that wealth translates into a global perspective with high expectations for academic achievement. My inquisitive students are enthusiastic learners who come to school highly motivated. The families of our children have sacrificed much to be in this country and the children hope to fulfill their families' dreams for success. For that reason we try to bring the best resources to our students in hopes of realizing high expectations that will lay a foundation for future opportunities.

My Project

I am requesting model magic and paint brush pens for sculpture projects that will serve as the hands-on accompaniment to our subscription of Scholastic Art. The students read with each issue suggestions for projects to develop in class and the 3 dimensional component would make a nice addition to our work that demonstrates student learning. The model magic packets we hope to use come in 1 oz. units so that they are easy for students to use without wasting this clay-like material. Students can always open more packets but this way our model magic does not dry before we are done using it. The Crayola paint brush pens would make painting so easy because we wouldn't have to distribute water and could avoid spillage and time consuming cleanup. With model magic and paint brush pens we'd have the best of both worlds using paint and this new form of "not quite" clay. We would actually be able to have art sessions more often.

Model magic and paint brush pens will allow us to schedule art more often in the classroom because of the ease of use.

I can even distribute small packets for students to take home and create work that could accompany a writing component. The paint brush pens would facilitate painting without the extended time needed for cleanup. Time is always the challenge in the classroom and these products offer a teacher ease of use that encourages more time for art. We hope potential funders agree.
