My Project

I teach math to 7th and 8th graders in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My students are energetic, extremely hard-working, and love to learn regardless of their socioeconomic status. My students love to build and create meaningful projects that help them learn difficult math topics, and moreover, gain the tools to excel in higher level math classes. My students are activists, young leaders, and changemakers. I love them with all my heart and strive to be the best teacher I can possibly be for them- and more importantly push them to work to their full potential.

Calculating surface area on a worksheet is one thing, but physically creating a house will give my students a mathematical learning experience that they will never forget.

To start this project, my students will have a question and answer session with an interior designer and architect. She will discuss how she uses math, and specifically surface area in her career. After that, the students will design their dream home!

Developing calculations and bringing them to life will be epic.

They must have at least four rooms, and they will calculate the surface area and square footage of each room and hallway. After that, they will measure out their homes on real blueprint paper that has already been donated. They will then build rooms out of cardboard and use hot glue and scissors to assemble them based on their measurements. They will also calculate the dimensions of their roof (a triangular prism) and build a roof!

Students will then get to practice their presentation skills and present their work to the class! This project is cross-curricular and brings math to life in a super creative way. We would love your help to make it even more rad!
