My Students

Having an audio recording class in high school is definitely cool. But having equipment that can be taken out of the classroom for students to test their knowledge and create their own projects? That's even cooler.

My students are well on their way to understanding the fundamentals of audio engineering.

They've learned about electricity, current, signal flow, gain structure, microphone placement, acoustics, phase cancellation and more. They've started to learn how to play basic musical instruments and write group compositions. But what they're still lacking is the ability to create their own projects and run their own recording sessions. My students are craving the opportunity to get out of our single classroom and test their skills. They have a firm understanding of the basics, and are definitely ready to move on to the next step.

My Project

Right now we have roughly 30 students all in one room trying to run recording sessions. As you can imagine, there just isn't enough equipment or opportunities for everyone to be involved at the same time. In addition, all of the projects are being recorded with just one computer station. These iPads and interfaces will be a complete game changer in terms of students' opportunity to get involved. The iPads will essentially be the centerpiece behind mobile recording stations. My students will be able to divide into teams and take the recording stations all over the school to set up sessions, do basic tracking, and then upload their mixes for analysis. With an iPad, an interface, and a microphone any room can instantly become a makeshift recording studio. In addition, my students will develop independent learning skills and become more comfortable as self enablers. This is a huge step for the average high school student.

My students will be able to explore their own ideas and create their own projects. (I already have students asking if they can record backing vocals in a stairwell to experiment with natural reverb!)
