My Students

My students are eager learners who want to do their best every day. They are just not always able to because public funding does not provide for adequate materials to make this possible.

I teach a class of ESL fourth graders at a small public-school campus in San Antonio, Texas.

More than half of my students are learning English as a second language, coming from as diverse backgrounds as India, Africa, and Asia. Their English levels range from beginners with no English to advanced language learners. Additionally, my students' abilities range from highly gifted to special needs. A significant number of my students are economically disadvantaged. All of these students are in my classroom since my district follows a collaborative, inclusive teaching model.

My Project

My students love to choose their own learning during Genius Hour. Right now they are limited by their choice of materials and tools. This project would allow my students to use their creativity to invent new items with Makey Makey, build models with the 3D pens, and learn to code with Sphero robots. The other materials will allow them to make plans and create using fabric and other media.

These materials will help inspire my students to learn, create, invent, and program.

Research shows this increases student engagement and therefore improves learning. When students direct their own learning and have the materials they need, they achieve.
