Many of my students view mathematics as an insurmountable obstacle. This year, I'd like them to see the subject as a set of tools that they'll use to interact with the world as well as better their lives and the lives of others. To do this, we need a state of the art mobile computer.
Imagine that you're an at-risk middle school student with skills far below grade level.
You want--more than anything--to improve, but you're against all odds. You come to school every day without basic materials, such as pencils, paper, and folders, and your classroom is ill-equipped as well. I have been lucky enough this year to have an amazing batch of students, but most of them are in this situation. They're some of the most awe-inspiring and courageous people you'll ever meet. As teens coming of age in the inner city, the vast majority come to school on any given day with a multitude of problems resting on their shoulders. Still, they have shown me how much they truly care about improving their futures through education.
A state of the art mobile computing center would provide my students tools to investigate their curiosities and participate in the information revolution. This MacBook would provide a mobile, state-of-the-art computing center. It would be an all-in-one form factor, and have a permanent presence in our room. It would be powerful enough to work perfectly for any situation such as small group discussion, independent research, and presentations. Additionally, it would spark an interest in math for many unmotivated students. The information revolution is changing the way our world works. I'd like my students to learn to use the tools necessary to participate in the modern world.
A mobile computing center, complete with a MacBook Pro, will allow my students to become comfortable using modern educational tools.
Online classrooms and resources such as Khan Academy, Think Through Math, Code Academy, and Wikipedia can provide my students with resources that teachers even a few years ago could only dream of having. I ask for this MacBook to provide my students an opportunity to participate in the information revolution.
