Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are ESL students. ESL stands for English as a Second Language. My students face a multitude of barriers in their attempt to succeed academically and to adapt to American society. These two key features of the transitional process are closely interrelated, particularly since many of them arrived to the United States at an age when social acceptance is a critical factor.
❝Language is the road map of a culture, it tells you where its people come from and where they are going.❞‒Rita Mae Brown.
For my students the education difficulties before them tend to be particularly hard to overcome in regular school settings since many of them come from parts of the world where they received little, if any, formal education. Through the ESL/Culinary program the students will be able to flourish academically and it will facilitate the acquisition of the English language.
My Project
My students need a mixer and rolling pins for cooking. This course is designed to provide ESL students with learning experiences that allows them to meet the new Common Core Standards and graduation requirements. The ESL program is sensitive to students’ first language and culture. This course addresses the four language skill, areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Using technical reading skills students will learn how to prepare basic foods and explore food related careers.
Students will learn about kitchen safety, sanitation, measuring and math, reading and understanding a recipe and proper use of kitchen equipment. Students will understand the recommendations of the Food Guide Pyramid for good nutrition and work cooperatively in lab groups for hands-on experience with food preparation.
