My Project

We desperately need more microscope slides and cover slips in my biology class! In my biology class, we do a ton of microscopy! Pre-made slides are expensive and usually there aren't enough in a set to go around. As a result, I try to have them observe specimens that we collect and mount ourselves! Students know how to place a specimen on a microscope slide, put it into focus and create scientific sketches of what they see. Our biology students will soon be learning about the 2 types of cell division: meiosis and mitosis. In addition to modeling each of the stages of mitosis, I want students to observe the process under the microscope with real specimens! Premade slides with onion root tip samples are expensive, so we're gonna mount our own! My students already know how to mount their own slides, so this will be a super fun process!! It also feels more real when they get to place the preserved specimens on the microscope slides themselves.

Many cell structures and processes, (ie, mitosis & meiosis) can be dry and abstract topics, but visualizing them under the microscope with real specimens brings it to life!

Even more, students gain confidence when they set up their own samples themselves. Please consider donating to help my biology class acquire preserved onion root tips, aceto orcein stain, and plastic cover slips so we can view the different stages of cell division under the microscope.
