My Students

We are a community school who doesn't have entrance exams, family interviews, or any other prerequisite for admission. We educate every student who walks into our doors. Many of our students come from struggling families where there simply isn't enough of anything, especially in the years since Hurricane Sandy. In school we do the best we can as teachers to meet our students needs. We love our students, and our students love us.

My students are hardworking, inspiring, emerging adults who dream of creating a better future for all of us.

My Project

This project is basic. The majority of kids who go to school ever day throughout the world have these items. Although for my students, particularly at the end of the school year, they have completely run out of pens, pencils, and paper. They're folders are ripped, and they have read all the books in the classroom library.

When students don't have basic supplies it is much harder for them to concentrate on the schoolwork.

In the past that is when absenteeism rises. Which is the start of vicious cycle of becoming hopeless. I see it in their eyes - if I don't have a pen and paper what's the point of even showing up. It's tragically sad and breaks my heart.
