Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We walk into class and empty our backpacks. Everything has a place. We know what to do, where it goes, and how to do it. But my students want to be able to do things on their own. From the beginning of the day to the end. How can I help my children build their independence for the entire day?

This is an ICT class with general and special education students.

Students in our school come from very low income families who are trying to make ends meet. Our school is a Title I school. This means that 99% of our school population lives below the poverty level and is entitled to the free lunch program. Although the students in our school have limited resources, they are always eager to learn and are very enthusiastic and independent. Our school is located in a very poor section of New York City. Most of our students live in housing projects or shelters. The resources available to the school are very limited and since the parents are low income we really cannot ask them for too many supplies.

My Project

The mailbox communication center I am asking for will be very beneficial to my second grade class. Students will be able to enter the classroom from the moment they walk in and provide an independent organization system where students have their own mailbox to place their folder/homework. Students who are done early with work throughout the day will be able to have a job of putting returned work and special announcement papers into the correct box. Students will also have a set organized place where their work will be every single day. The CD player will also be beneficial because it will provide my students the opportunity to finally have a listening center. Students will be able to, when done with work early or when we have center time, go to the listening center and listen to books on CD. Lastly, the vowel sounds bins will be used as learning stations where they will get the opportunity to build the essential foundations necessary for students to be able to read.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom by providing natural ways for the brain to learn.

A listening center will be just one way for children to learn. Children learn through authentic interactions; where they are able to touch and interact with objects. When students get the opportunity to do things on their own through interactions then will they get the chance to move from a dependent learner to an independent learner.
