My Students

I am trying to bring the world to my students through music. By having a gathering drum, we can study Native American music and traditions. The temple blocks will be used to study the traditions of Asian musical culture, including Korea and China.

My students are curious about world music and cultures.

I guess that comes from their equally curious music teacher - me! My students love music class and learning about different world cultures through music. Our Illinois school is Kindergarten through 6th grade, with almost 800 students. We are a low income district, with over 70% of our students on free or reduced lunch.

My Project

Every grade level studies Native American and Asian music, and I use what little resources I have to bring them more information and musical experiences. I would use the gathering drum to study the music and culture of Native Americans. Native Americans use drumming to celebrate special occasions, and drummers are revered and respected by the community. I would like to teach my students about respect and proper drumming techniques for the gathering drum. Temple blocks will also be used to bring the sounds of Asian music to the classroom. My students will learn a deeper appreciation for Asian and Native American music and culture.

I work with low income students that may never have the chance to travel to Asia or even to Native American reservations in our country.

My students need music in their lives to bring them joy and a sense of pride in themselves. Eventually, I would like to include these drums & blocks in my grade level concerts.
