In September, my 9th grade English students will tell me they hate reading and simply do not read. But, by June the same students will tell me they love to read. It is not that they really hate reading, it is just they hate all their previous experiences with reading. Many of my students struggle with reading, and were never given a book they could read or would enjoy reading. This robs them of forming a love for reading that so many develop at half their age. To combat this injustice, I developed an independent reading program that works to instill a love of reading in my students. Through my independent reading program students select a book from our classroom library, and participate in fifteen minutes of silent sustained reading. Students complete a weekly reading log, and periodically create projects and book reports based on their readings. With the reading program and other work completed in class, students advance on average one grade level in reading comprehension and vocabulary. But more importantly when they leave my classroom in June they are regularly going to the library and reading books on their own. Reading is so important for my students. I work in a large Title 1 public high school, and for these students reading allows them to go on adventures they otherwise would never have the privilege to go on. When they read they can be whoever they choose to be. Possibly even more importantly, it prepares them for college. Reading offers my students background & prior knowledge. Knowledge they should have, but is stolen from them because of their low socioeconomic status. I love my reading program, but it is very challenging to keep the classroom library suitable for the number of students I have. This year I have over 90 students, and dozens of previous students who come to me looking for books. Every student who asks me for a book gets one. I simply can not say no to a student who is asking for a book to read. But my library is getting smaller and smaller. Often books go missing or students lend them to parents, siblings, or friends never to be returned. I think this is wonderful that the students share the book with friends and family, but it makes it very challenging to keep the library stacked. We just need a few books to replace some of the lost ones to get us through this term. Anyway you can help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and thank you in advance for helping my students’ dreams become a reality!
