This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My name is Ms. M., and I am a second year teacher in Baltimore City. My 5th grade classroom, which is in a small school located in Southwest Baltimore, thrives on student happiness and success. Each and every student who walks through our door brings his or her own set of inspirations and life experiences, and they inspire me every day to be the best I can be. About 86.3% of our students are the free or reduced price meal plan, and 25.2% are English Language Learners.

I wholeheartedly believe that every single one of my students has what it takes to be successful, and I am willing to try whatever it takes to get them where they need and WANT to be.

I love seeing our students, throughout the whole school, walk in with smiles on their faces, and I will try anything I can think of to ensure those smiles remain there. After all, school is all about learning and growing together.

My Project

This year, we have a lot of different projects flying around our interactive 5th grade classroom. We work a great deal with computers and interact with videos to help us support our learning of texts. A new set of classroom speakers will allow students to sit wherever they choose in the classroom and still be able to hear the videos. The speakers will also allow us to relax with soothing music as we are working independently on different skills.

Hard work and dedication go a long way in our classroom.

My students very much enjoy nonfiction texts and the TIME for Kids subscription will allow them to access nonfiction texts whenever they choose as well provide them with a reward for hard work. This will also help to prepare us for our unit on text features in nonfiction writing as well as our research unit.

Lastly, we go through a great many sticky notes and index cards throughout the year, and we have already begun to run very low. We use sticky notes most days as we are reading to take notes on our reading as well as our writing. The index cards have also proved to be a great resource for my students as we practice higher level vocabulary as well as when we go back to the basics.
