Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is inspired by a common saying among literacy teachers: books can be mirrors when readers see themselves and their lives reflected in the story, windows when they allow readers to experience lives and stories that are different from their own, or sliding glass doors when readers feel transported into the world of the story.

When children have access to a diverse library, that represents a variety of cultures, they are offered both ideas and stories that affirm their own identities, as well as exposed to new stories about people who are different from them.

One of my goals as a teacher is to ensure that students can seem themselves represented in my classroom library when they go to choose books, as well as being able to present stories from around the country and world in order to highlight the diversity of humanity on the planet. My goal is to help my students develop empathy and compassion for all, and self-love for themselves.

The students in my classroom both this year and next will be a bilingual group of eager learners, many of whom are English Language Learners or Diverse Learners with a variety of interests. We are able to have conversations around our identities, and often make connections with what we read from our classroom library. Further diversifying our classroom library with this project of representative storybooks will have an impact on my classes for years to come as they read through the new titles.
