My Students

My school is located in Kensington, Philadelphia, a vibrant community bursting with many cultures and languages. You may have seen our neighborhood in the news, but trust me, my school and my ESL students are what Kensington is really about: building up the leaders and innovators of the future!

My students in Kensington live in a dynamic area of Philadelphia, where many cultures and languages come to collaborate and live in harmony at our school.

Children at our school learn to embrace diverse identities as part of the school community, in their general classrooms as well as in my ESL classroom. As well as a rigorous academic course load, all students learn to develop their cultural identities as a source of strength and pride. They love to discuss the similarities and differences between their languages, customs, religions, and daily lives. All of this introspection leads our students to come to believe in their potential as game-changers not only in Kensington but in the world!

My Project

Kensington was once a bustling hub of industry in Philadelphia. Now things are much different, but our neighborhood and the school remain full of diverse cultures and families and students that are determined to change the world. My students and their families are proud to come from many countries and speak many languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, and Jamaican Creole.

As the ESL teacher of my elementary school, I look to not only develop my student's language skills but also their cultural identities and self-confidence.

I hope to build a classroom library for my students and me to use for multiple purposes: to give interesting choices for independent reading, to bring a variety of topics to our read alouds, and most importantly, to provide "mirrors and windows" into their own cultures as well as each other.

With your support, my students can begin to see literacy as a tool for one major purpose: an opportunity to learn about themselves, their community, and the world around them. Help me bring the joy of literacy to my incredible students in Kensington!
