Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I believe that all people achieve their full potential through education. As a special education teacher, I truly get a sense of how children are struggling within the classroom. I work with students with disabilities and often times they are also English Language Learners (ELLs).

This is my second year working with students with disabilities in a NYC school.

On top of having a disability, some of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs). This makes learning a daily battle for my students. Even though I am a history teacher, my lessons always include an ELA (English Language Arts) component to ensure that my students are progressing academically. I incorporate reading and writing skills into my lessons to give my students extra support as they navigate through middle school. My students have never used their disability or the language barrier as an excuse in the classroom. Each student puts forward their best effort on a daily basis. Despite their disabilities, they are by far the hardest working students I have ever encountered. Their determination and perseverance is inspiring.

My Project

"Out of difficulties grow miracles..." Jean De La Bruyere. As a social studies teacher in a self-contained setting, I know how important it is to make history come alive for my students. I try my best to help my students travel back in time to a world very different from their own. Unfortunately, I do not have enough supplies or hands-on materials for my students. I need materials that encourage teamwork, creativity, reflection and critical thinking skills. The more opportunities to provide a hands-on experience, the better. My students are kinesthetic learners. They learn best by creating or participating in physical activities within the classroom setting. With your help, I can deliver ancient history with a hands-on approach!

As a teacher, I am constantly trying to find new and interesting materials to use with my students.

When I first starting teaching, resources tending to be free on the internet. Now, everything has a price! It is very difficult to find a website that provides teaching materials. I would love to use the sculpting clay as an exit project for our ancient Egypt unit. I want students to create an ancient Egyptian achievement out of clay. Hopefully, the mini models will be ready in time for the Social Studies Fair. Lastly, the globes are so crucial to understanding geography. Our books are flat. The globes will allow students to visualize the absolute and relative locations of places they are learning about in social studies. This project will make a lasting difference in the lives of my students by offering materials that trigger their creativity and imagination. These materials will allow students to showcase their strengths and abilities.
