My Students

Young children love storybooks! With the breadth and depth of math knowledge and skills which young children must learn in elementary school, there is simply no better way to introduce and teach these concepts than through rich fiction and literature.

My students are 18 of the most precocious, eager young learners between ages 5 and 6.

Many of them are from homes whose primary language is not English, and 75% of my class receives free or reduced lunch. This not withstanding, they are bright, capable, and kind! Many of my students do not come to school with a wide array of experiences from which to draw upon and make connections. Few have been to a real, sit-down restaurant before or been on a family summer vacation. My school is a Title I public school in Florida and my students have a higher mobility rate in that while many of them will attend the same elementary school for grades K-5, many more will attend 2, 3, 4, or even more schools by the time they attend middle-school. They love to be read to and they are aspiring readers. Read-aloud books create an opportunity to understand complex concepts and make connections through the books we read. It helps them wrap their heads around big ideas and they thoroughly enjoy them!

My Project

The books I am requesting are going to be used to introduce and teach math concepts from our new Common Core State Standards. These are books recommended by the top educators in the country for their literary and mathematical strengths. They range from fiction to informational fiction, to nonfiction text. These books will deepen the understanding my students have for the math concepts they will learn in kindergarten and more importantly, help lay the foundation for the math skills that they will build upon as they continue elementary school and beyond. I will be able to draw upon these books for class projects, and activities. They provide wonderful shared experiences that children can relate to as they work collaboratively. Oftentimes teachers and learners rely on past experiences to build our knowledge and new learning upon. When half of my students have had an experience and the other half have not this can be a challenge. These books will create shared experiences and events!

Most upper elementary grades rely upon a textbook for students to learn new concepts.

In primary elementary grades textbooks are not very useful in this regard. The requested books are an incredible resource! Using literature to teach math is a best practice that increases student engagement and, thereby, learning! These titles, while very valuable, are very obscure and not often found in the school media center. Having these books will influence my students for this year, and many more to come!
