My Project
My students are very excited and eager to learn new things. Having them experience new types of foods that are farm fresh and fun to create is the goal for the project. Many students immediately make up their minds about a fruit or vegetable because of its name or how it looks. Having students engage in making a tasty fun snack with fruits and vegetables will help them take a risk and try new healthy foods.
When students put on an apron and hat and look like a chef they feel confident to cook like a chef and prepare healthy foods to eat.
Teaching students cooking skills like how to safely clean, cut, and arrange foods into fun creations like owls made from apples, fruit skewers, hungry caterpillars cut from oranges, parfaits, frozen banana treats, and setting up tasting stations give students the courage to try and enjoy foods that other students may already be fond of. Students take risks when they see their peers do the same.
This project incorporates nutritional skills while learning about new foods and their benefits. Language and literacy skills as students learn new vocabulary and read recipes. Mathematics while students learn how to measure, use geometrical shapes, fractions, and arithmetic operations. Life skills such as cooking, cleaning, hygiene, preparing lists, shopping, and budgets. These are lifelong skills students will carry with them into the future.
