Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine living in NYC but because you go to school in the Bronx, you only have a 70% chance of graduating High School? Now add to this the fact that you came to High School speaking a language other than English- and your chances of graduation get even smaller.

I teach at a high school in the heart of the Bronx helping students who are learning English become college-ready in math and science.

A lot of our students move quickly into learning English- even if they struggle with literacy in their home language. Although they enter our school with little limited English, we join them in their goal of graduating high school in just 4 years. They are hard-working and want to make a better future - for themselves, and our city.

My Project

Teaching Algebra 1 via a computer can be challenging. I have found that having great videos that students can pause and rewind allows them to take charge of their learning. This also has decreased confusion and allowed many students to be really successful even in this difficult remote learning setting. But, without the right tech, making videos is a laborious task.

An Ipad Mini would allow me to make colorful, engaging videos easily and often.

This would give my students more video examples to assist them in their learning, more video feedback to their questions and provide IEP services (like read alouds for tests and word problems) with ease.
