Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A teacher feels a funny sense of pride when being called a "Noob" by a student schooling YOU on technology.

I have the privilege of teaching tech-savvy Hispanic teens in a densely populated urban public school.

90%+ students are low-socioeconomic on the free lunch program, and our school is surrounded by homelessness and heavy public transit.

My Project

Greetings fellow 21st century compatriot! This past year of distance learning has certainly been a challenge for both students and teachers alike. But necessity begets discovery and invention; and the necessity of online instruction has brought to light a multitude of creative and innovative programs, platforms and resources that educators across the country will continue to use once we return to in-person instruction.

MINECRAFT Education Edition is one such game based learning platform that promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive digital environment.

My students and I discovered this program mid-last year and were hooked! Educators have learned that the best way to engage students is to tap into their interests and personal experiences. What better way to reach today's teens than to embed educational content into video game culture?

With Minecraft Education Edition my students will be able to virtually manipulate Common Core Standard concepts in a language they understand (GAMING!!). Already we have engaged in lessons as a class in Minecraft Worlds that allow students to create and manipulate Coordinate Planes, placing X & Y points on graphs. We have studied Angles and different Geometric Figures as they experiment with architecture and building. Not only are we expanding and facilitating math comprehension, but through this virtual vehicle they are engaging in and strengthening STEAM education and 21st century Skills.

Unfortunately the Chrome books provided by our school district are NOT compatible with Minecraft Education Edition and we need the right technology to run the program. With just ONE game compatible computer we can share screen as a class and explore the Minecraft Game World as we learn valuable academic content and 21st century Digital literacy. Please help!
