Mindfulness Training: Helping Students Self Regulate
I need professional development in secular mindfulness.

My Students
My special needs self-contained students have a very diverse range of abilities that makes teaching them highly rewarding. I have complete faith in them, and firmly believe they are capable of anything! But as both special needs and inner city students, as well as typical adolescents, they face unique challenges. One particular challenge is learning to regulate their emotions and behaviors. I've learned that one very effective tool they can use to help is mindfulness. Research over decades shows that mindfulness training develops increased attention, increased executive function, decreased ADHD behaviors, fewer anger management issues, increased self-calming--to name a few benefits!!
I've been using mindfulness with great success in my classroom, and now I want to take it to the next level.
I've been accepted to a Mindful Educators Course at Mindful Schools with a scholarship.
My Project
As special needs teens in the inner city, my students face special challenges. Numerous studies show significant benefits to using secular mindfulness in our schools: research shows improved attention, improved emotional regulation, greater compassion and self compassion, and decreased anxiety. All these are critical to academic success as well as character growth. Last year, I used beginner mindfulness on my students to great success, especially the period after lunch and in the late afternoon, when they are easily pulled away by school "drama," as well as their own challenges such as ADHD, anger management, behavioral disabilities, etc. Just the untrained mindfulness I was doing helped enormously with my students! They were visibly calmer and more focused. This year I would like to more rigorously apply mindfulness in my classes. But I need training.
I'm enrolled in an online professional development course, Mindful Educator Essentials, from Mindfulschools.org, that will train me to apply secular mindfulness to my students.
