Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our high school is the only NYC Department of Education school that was established to support and uplift the LGBTQ Community and their allies. While all students are welcome, it is a safe haven for those who are often marginalized and targeted in society. The student population is comprised of adolescents that are at risk for self harm, rejection from society, low self-esteem, and other pressing issues facing the community at large.

Our student council surveyed the student body about what they might want to add to the school community in order to make this space everything a student needs in order to be successful.

The winning idea was a Mindfulness Sensory Space. After engaging in remote instruction for a few years, and returning back to the building, everyone is adjusting to the changes that have resulted from the Pandemic. From time to time students feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and this prevents them from achieving their best in school. By providing students with a space where they can independently decompress, self-soothe, and collect their thoughts they will be able to refocus in a way that prepares them to re-enter a classroom ready to successfully engage in learning.

Currently, we have a room allocated for the Mindfulness Sensory room and are now in need of materials necessary to create a space that welcomes all students. With your contributions our Student Council will have the means and materials necessary to make this space come to life, adding one more reason to enroll here.
