My Students

My students are smart, creative, and community-minded. They are interested and curious about the world around them. They want to understand why the inequities exist in our society, so that they can figure out how to challenge and transform our society.

My students are facing so many challenges during this pandemic, and they still do their best to attend their classes on zoom and stay engaged each day.

They amaze me with the many ways they are able to handle their multiple roles in their homes.

We are a Title I school, so we need a lot of extra resources, especially if we want to order supplies or class sets of books. A high percentage of students receive free and reduced-price lunch, so it is also another financial burden for families to purchase extra supplies.

My Project

I want my students to have their own mats where they can comfortably practice mindfulness and yoga. Because we are still in a pandemic, all of my students are learning from home. Having their own mats will help them to create a sacred and intentional space where they can relax, come back to their breaths, and move their bodies.

My students deserve to have a special place where they can remind themselves that they always an anchor, they always have somewhere they can return, and they can always come back to their own breaths.

Being able to sit on our mats and just be present with ourselves is a challenge, and it is the first step in creating awareness of our own thoughts, emotions, and bodies. There are so many distractions that keep us from recognizing and understanding our own emotions, so I hope that sitting on our mats and breathing together will help my students take that first step. I am currently participating in a 200 hour yoga and SEL teacher training, so I am learning how to safely and intentionally facilitate trauma informed and accessible yoga and social emotional learning practices for young people. My hope is that my students and I learn lifelong practices for our social emotional health and wellness.
