This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I serve high school students in a Title I school which means that the majority of our families are living below the federal poverty line (annual income of $39,000 or less for a family of four). We are located in Kissimmee, FL, and 63% of our student body is Hispanic. We also have a growing Haitian population and many other immigrants from a diversity of places. Our student is quite transient and in many cases students are living in temporary housing situations such as in hotels, with friends, or with relatives. They come to school with a variety of heavy responsibilities and unimaginable circumstances and are expected to perform at the level of any average American high schooler.

In my classroom, students would benefit from access to yoga mats to practice mindfulness activities such as yoga and breath work, which calms the nervous system allowing them to perform better on assignments and assessments.

Many of them suffer from test anxiety and need to learn how to calm their anxiety. I started bringing my yoga mat to the classroom to practice my own mindfulness in between classes or during transitions and found that students were interested in learning. They went to the gymnasium, borrowed exercise mats, and came back to the class to join me in a beginner yoga session. I noticed immediately that they relaxed, they laughed, and it made the classroom a peaceful, healthy oasis for them.

In addition to the mats, storage, and mat cleaner, I have requested a couple of guides on how to incorporate yoga into the classroom. I've also requested a wall hanging with positive affirmations and a chime to help bring attention back to classroom instructions. Creating this oasis will have an enormous positive effect on my stressed out teen students.
