This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love about my first grade students is their desire to learn and their creativity! My students learn in many different ways: visually, kinesthetically, auditorily, verbally, logically, socially, and individually. Teaching my students the art of yoga not only addresses all of the various ways they learn, but also provides my students mindfulness techniques that help them to regulate feelings and emotions.

Mindfulness matters especially in the classroom, so students have tools to help them slow down, become aware of themselves and others, and be able to communicate and express their needs.

We start each day with Community Circle, where students are taught mindfulness activities such as yoga, breathing techniques, and meditation. My goal is to give each student their own yoga mat, so they can claim their own space in the classroom to explore safely and freely.

I also plan to include yoga time during literacy and mathematics lessons, where students can make letters and numbers through movement. This provides a deeper connection to lessons, and provides a creative outlet to help them flourish!
