My Students

Welcome to Zucker Lightning Exceptional Children! This class serves students with a variety of disabilities in the self contained setting. Our students are full of energy and ideas. They love to move, create, work together and appreciate positive attention.

As a teacher at a low income/high poverty school, my students face many challenges at home and at school.

Despite the many challenges my students face at home, they enjoy being at school in order to experience new things while learning.

My Project

I teach a life skills class that focuses on overcoming obstacles, whatever that may be in my students' lives. This class practices techniques and tools that students can use when they encounter difficult situations in their day. These students have difficulty with self-regulation and self-management skills.

The ability to recognize and regulate one's own emotions/thoughts DIRECTLY correlates to a student's academic success in the classroom.

The practice of mindfulness in the classroom will support and empower students, leading to better self-regulation, emotion management and problem solving skills and ultimately stronger academic success.

Students will use these yoga mats and games in conjunction with direct instruction in mindfulness. In class we practice yoga poses and mindful thinking and breathing.

Recent research shows that mindfulness training with children helps develop increased attention, executive function, emotion regulation, self-calming, social skills, compliance, and care for others, as well as increased self-acceptance and self-esteem, among other benefits.
