My Students

I am a school counselor in a public, PreK-5 elementary school. The students at my school are a diverse group culturally, ethnically, and economically. I work primarily with students in grades 3 through 5, providing classroom lessons and individual and small-group counseling services.

I teach students life skills, encouraging the development of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Among the skills that I highlight in my classroom lessons and small-group counseling sessions are emotional regulation, perseverance, teamwork, conflict resolution, and goal setting, essential skills for success in school, in family and peer relationships, and later in the world of work. Recently, I have begun to incorporate mindfulness instruction into my work with students as it further supports students' physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of items in this project, all related to teaching my students some of the skills involved in mindfulness and mindful living. First, I am requesting several mindfulness games. I will be able to use these in small-group counseling sessions with at-risk students to expand on the mindfulness concepts we discuss in whole-class lessons. Second, I am requesting a variety of books that help explain mindfulness concepts to students and their parents. These resources will add legitimacy to the skills I am teaching by providing information about the foundation of and research behind mindfulness, as well as provide specific activities for use in small-group and whole-class lessons. Third, I am requesting some meditation CDs that I can use in whole-class lessons to promote students' mindfulness practices. While understanding these concepts is important, it is the consistent practice of mindful living by students that will help them improve focus and better manage difficult emotions.

Last I am requesting a brain model and some CBT activities that I can use with students in individual counseling to help them make life changes that will improve their academic progress, behavior, and ability to regulate their feelings.

All of these items will promote the practice of mindfulness by my students, a practice that has been shown to improve academics, peer and family relationships, and overall mental, physical, and emotional health.
