My Students

Our students are 9th, 10th and 11th graders (we are a new public school, so 12th grade will be added next year), most of whom come from high poverty, high stress living situations. Many have parents who are ill, addicted, incarcerated or deceased, working several jobs or struggling to find work. Many have been exposed to sometimes extreme violence. Some of our students, though born here, come from families with undocumented adults and live with the fear of seeing their families split in two. But all of our kids, hope to overcome the trauma of their lives to become successful in whatever way they define this and our teaching staff is here to support them.

Although the neighborhood in which our school sits is considered high crime, and the sound of gunshots echoes through the streets, we have tried to make our building a safe haven.

One of the ways in which we do this is through the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is one of the core values of our school. As a certified Mindful School teacher, I have shared these healing practices with students and staff alike.

My Project

We have seen mindfulness make a difference in the lives of our high-poverty, highly stressed students, but more support is needed. Many of our kids are in dire need of skills that will support emotional regulation, clear and responsible choice-making and an ability to stay present and attentive in class. We are establishing a Mindfulness Room for this purpose. This room will be a safe, quiet space for students who need to bring some ease to their agitated nervous systems, practice a meditation specific to their current needs and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. The room will be staffed by a certified Mindful Schools instructor. Because students will come into the room with different needs, choosing guided meditations from MP3 players will allow them to chose the practice that most suits their current state of mind.

Each of these recorded guided mindfulness meditations will help our kids build self-regulatory skills, self-compassion, empathy and the ability to stay present and attentive in class.
