Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I began my career in education over 20 years ago and I can honestly say that I love my job more than ever. My students are full of love, curiosity, wonder, playfulness, and dreams. Despite the fact that many of my students have circumstances in their lives that can make focus and academic engagement difficult to achieve and sustain, my students still come to school and still are willing to work hard and let me push them (hard!) when they need it. It is such a gift for me to be able to see these young people, some facing extreme difficulties, blossom and grow.

Each day, we end our time together by appreciating a particular classmate.

I am always moved by the tender and specific things that my students come up with for one another: "I appreciate how, when you help me, you don't tell me the answer but help me find it myself"; "I appreciate how you try to remind me to do the right thing"; "I appreciate how, when I'm stressed, you try to make me laugh"; "I appreciate how I've seen you work harder than you used to on your work". They are lovely.

My Project

These two courses will enable me to help bring mindfulness to our staff and students.

Numerous recent studies show that mindfulness skills help students, particularly those who come from environments of high stress, learn to regulate their emotions and anxieties.

Students with anger issues, or with attention issues, have been shown to improve their school performance once they have learned skills for monitoring their own reactions in the school setting.

Furthermore, once a student learns mindfulness skills, they will have these skills for dealing with stress and anger for the rest of their lives, as well as for the lives of their own future children.

At this school, more than 50% of students are Black, Latino, and/or Native American, and more than 50% come from low-income households. Learn how your donation to this school supports a more equitable education.
