Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are an international newcomer academy serving newly arrived immigrant youth in grades 9 through 12. Last year, we were able to place 9 mindfulness corners in classrooms. These have been wonderful resources for our school community. But our program has expanded and now we have more students and teachers! Therefore, we need four more mindfulness corners with the carpets, chairs and inspirational posters. We, also, learned that it helped having stuffed animals and manipulatives in the corners (and at desks) helps students as well.

Many of our students come from extreme trauma, which was what drove them to immigrate, or experienced trauma during journey or upon arrival.

Additionally, they have many responsibilities beyond being students such as jobs and night and taking care of family. These corners or for them if/when they are triggered to take a step back or when they are tired or just need a space to feel safe. We offer one corner in each of their core classes.
