Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This upcoming school year, I am taking on yet another new challenge. I will have the chance of once again teaching all subject areas to a fifth grade classroom. The wonderful students at my school make up the most wonderful fifth graders located in South Philadelphia. Our school is a very diverse school where forty percent of our school population are English language learners. There are fifteen, different languages spoken at our school. Our school has a strong community that works endlessly for the benefit of our terrific students. Everyone from the principal, staff, students, and their parents work together each day.

In addition to being a 5th grade self-contained teacher, I am still supporting our school with math curriculum, and instructional support as our Math Lead teacher.

My Project

Sometimes we just need the chance to take a personal time out. Especially during times of high stress, it is important to have a safe and nurturing area in even the busiest of classrooms to take a moment of peace. Allowing my students the time, and space to take of their own mental and emotional needs is essential to their learning. Self care is important for all individuals, therefore we have to create those spaces for our students to be able to experience this, so they can then learn in the classroom.

Help us to get the materials that will create a structure and welcoming environment for my students to have a peace corner.

Teaching my students to participate in mindfulness practice when they are enduring trauma and stress is essential to their overall development. It’s called the “peace corner” because there is something peaceful about simply being allowed to experience our feelings and take care of ourselves in the way that is right for us.
