My Students

Our school will prepare 100% of their learners for high school graduation, college and career readiness. Our mission is to increase high school graduation rates by providing a supportive and flexible learning environment that challenges every learner to find their voice and to exercise choice as they design their own pathways to success. Our school implements a different teaching/learning model based on the processes that lead to growth. Our students belong to underserved communities in the north and north west sides of Philadlephia.

Within our core values is Mindfulness.

It is highly important for our particular population to gain the skills to self-regulate and to self reflect. These are skills that allow them to cope with their difficulties and have a greater opportunity to thrive as productive and successful citizens, and to positively impact their communities.

I am requesting donations to create, equip and furnish our Mindfulness room, the space within the school in which we will offer minfulness sessions, yoga, and meditation throughtout the day to staff and students.

My Project

Healthy stress is a natural part of life, including childhood. Children and adults alike need to be challenged in order to grow and develop. However, in the modern education system, healthy stress is frequently displaced by toxic stress. Toxic stress occurs when life’s demands consistently outpace our ability to cope with those demands.

The mindfulness room serves as a ‘cool down’ or ‘calm down’ room for children who are upset, or otherwise being disruptive in class.

Teachers as well as other staff can refer students to this room, and students can also refer themselves with the permission of their supervising adult.

The items we are requesting will be used to adequately furnish the room that has been assigned specifically for mindfulness throughout the day.

The chairs will be used for students who come to practice meditation or mindfulness exercises.

The rug will be used to have students sit and color on a low coffee table we already have. The colored pencils, pencil sharpener and coloring book will be used for those students who wish to practice mindful coloring in this designed area.

Currently we don't have an air conditioning unit in the classroom and the fans will help the air circulate as well as to cool it down.

The diffuser and oils will provide a clean and enticing environment for clearing the mind and resetting emotions.

The yoga pretzel cards and the yoga ball will help students practice yoga and stretch while in the room.
