Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a group of curious 5th graders who enjoy new experiences. They are open minded. I am lucky to work with a group who is so willing to share ideas openly and respectfully.

61% of the students at our school receive free or reduced price lunch.

Many are from single parent families or are English Language Learners. We are also ethnically diverse as well. The students work very well together and are accepting of each other's differences.

We enjoy nontraditional activities and ways of learning while still integrating our district curriculum. Making learning relevant to real life is very important to them.

My Project

I have decided that my students should understand that there is a career option that we don't generally teach or prepare students for. It just happens to be a dream of mine also....owning your own business! So this past fall, we embarked on setting up a classroom business. We invited a speaker from the local Chamber of Commerce who spoke to the children about the many ways they help small businesses and why they are important to our communities.

The students then presented a business plan to the principal, and after her enthusiastic approval, we set about making hand crafted ornaments and other items to sell.

The success of our business was so surprising, we have decided to donate money to different initiatives and activities taking place in our school, further extending the learning into the idea of philanthropy.

We will open our store twice each year. But we would like to make our business more professional. For the first opening of our store, we had to use a student's desk, which did not provide the students with enough room to work. We had a metal cash box to keep our money in, which had to fit on top of the desk with other supplies we needed, like a note pad and pencil, bags and a price list. Therefore, real cash registers and stands will give it a "real store" look. The stand will give the students a place to put needed supplies. We will be able to store money more securely in a cash register and also offer give customers a receipt for their purchases. The "Big Shot" machine will enable us to make even more professional looking products.
