My Students

Fifth grade is a pivotal year for kids socially. They are beginning to come into their own and wonder how they fit in with the rest of the school. They are anxious about leaving the comforts of their elementary schools to navigate the waters of middle school. My students come from struggling families and will be in classes with students who have so much more. I want them to feel comfortable in being themselves, learn to stand up for what and whom they believe in, and see the value in true friendships.

Problem-solving in math is more than just memorization.

Our students are becoming more and more challenged when it comes to math class. Their analytical skills need to be honed and collaborative thinking will enhance their mathematical experiences. Liar math games allow them to analyze the math 'issue' as well as boosting their creativity in creating their math lies. The white boards can be used in each math station to solve the problems - eco-friendly!

My Project

As our school moves towards specialization areas for our fifth graders we are given the opportunity to explore math through different avenues. We are not 'tied down' to the textbook, but rather our students can now be exposed to different ways that math works.

Collaboration and teamwork are now essential in the 'real-world'.

With the help of these items, my students will be able to work together to solve a myriad of math problems, analyze math errors and create solutions to problems using the skills that they have practiced.

Gone are the days of simple pencil and paper worksheets in math. I welcome the days of math conversations in the classroom. Students learn to see things from another perspective when solving the problems. This ability will resonate throughout the rest of their subjects and outside the classroom.
