Mind Controlled Prosthetic Arm

Help me give my students the supplies needed to complete the prosthetic arm he is making, such as the Arduino nano to control it and the 3D printer filament to make the parts out of.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My name is Ibrahim Khater and I am a sophomore at Cypress Creek High School. In the past few months, I have been developing a prosthetic arm with the utilization of 3D printing. I was inspired to do this when I saw students at the University of Central Florida's (UCF) organization, Limbitless Solutions, do something similar. They found a way to use 3D printing to create affordable prosthetic arms. However, my project is different as I plan to make the arm controlled by neural impulses. In other words, controlling the arm using the brain.

So far, I have made significant progress in connecting brain activity to motor control.

Using a NeuroSky Mindwave Mobile 2 headset, brainwaves can be read and interpreted using an open-source microcontroller called Arduino. Soon, I will be able to generate more accurate controls translated in the form of finger motions. I am determined to finish the entire arm within the next few months.

My Project

This project focuses on developing an affordable and easily reproducible prosthetic arm that can be controlled using brain waves. The brain waves will be read using an EEG electrode that is connected to the users head. This is connected to a modem through bluetooth. The modem then communicates with the Arduino nano to tell the motors in the arm how to move.

The goal is to make it easy to control and soon make it available to those who need it.

The parts will be 3D printed and made open source so that those who do want to replicate it are able to.
