Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our high school, many students experience food insecurity, which negatively impacts their ability to focus and engage in learning. When students are hungry, they struggle to regulate their mood, retain information, and stay motivated. When they don't have the toiletries they need to show up feeling their best at school, it impacts their confidence and engagement. By providing healthy snacks and essential hygiene items, we're addressing a critical need. This support helps build trust, create a sense of safety, and allow students to open up in a comfortable environment.

Food and personal care items contribute to mental health by promoting trauma healing.

Many of our students face significant personal challenges, and providing these resources will help them feel more secure and connected to the school. Sharing a meal or providing care items can be a healing-centered practice, fostering a sense of community and mutual support.

Our high school serves a diverse student body, with the majority coming from low-income and under-served communities. By leveraging resources through this grant, we aim to create a supportive school climate where students’ basic needs are met, allowing them to focus on their education.

Access to healthy food and hygiene products is a school responsibility. By ensuring students are nourished and cared for, we are promoting brain function, mood regulation, and community building. This project will help bridge the gap for students facing economic hardships and create an equitable learning environment.

By addressing food insecurity and personal care, we can help students stay connected to school, maintain their mental health, and reach their full potential.
