Every child deserves to learn in a stress free environment. We can help our children by teaching them strategies and techniques to focus and release tension through Yoga. I am a third grade teacher working at a school in South Central Los Angeles. Ninety-seven percent of our students receive free and reduced lunch and we are sixty-eight percent English Language Learners. In this day and age, I have found that elementary students are dealing with more adult issues than they should have to. The ability to cope with modern problems creates stress and tension in our young students. One thing that I have learned about children today is that they need an outlet, they need strategies to know how to de-stress themselves in order to solve a problem or just to cope with everyday life. I know that we can achieve this kind of awareness through Yoga. After attending a Yoga Tools workshop for teachers, I decided to incorporate Yoga as part of my Physical Education program. I tried many of the strategies learned breathing exercises, visualization, simple postures and I have found a significant improvement with the level of focus with my students. Since we do not have a gymnasium, I have been doing this in my classroom. I would like to go further into Yoga by having the proper equipment (mats) for each student to further their practice and increase their their knowledge of how to release tension and de-stress during difficult situations. I am asking for 24 yoga mats with a video, poster, and storage box. With your help, my students will have the correct equipment for the practice of Yoga. It will allow my students gain more focus and learn more about themselves as they challenge themselves through the yoga postures. They will gain an understanding of how to calm their bodies during stressful situations. You can help in giving them life long strategies for dealing with problems, difficult situations, and empower them to be in control of their mind, body, and soul!
