My Students

Every day I greet students with hugs and smiles at the door. We start off with "circle" time. Students are able to express their feelings in a circle. This technique helps with the social/emotional aspect of their lives. We engage in a rich text that helps with reading, writing, and expressing ideas.

They are students who are products of generational poverty, but every day strive to do their best.

They are children who are always wanting more, and never allow their challenges to prevent them from learning and striving to be all that they can be. My scholars are very outspoken, and enjoy having their voices heard. I call them the "great debaters" because they would rather verbally complete tasks with groups versus independent practices on a worksheet. They all enjoy hands-on learning. They love for their work to be displayed around the school or on bulletin boards. Our school is such a family-oriented environment. Every staff member takes responsibility for each child's well being. It is never "my students”, it is always "our students”.

My Project

Students have started the school year so eager to learn. I have set a challenge for students to read a million words by December. Students have been reading and writing summaries about their books.

They also take Accelerated Reading tests online which gives them a score.

These tests focuses on comprehension and vocabulary. Once students have scored an 80% or above they will earn the number of words read. The A.R. program calculates all words read. I have never seen a group of students so excited about independent reading. I have parents emailing me daily about the love for reading their child has developed so soon in the school year. I would like to use the tablets, books and pillowcases as gifts for the first three students who reach a million words. I will personalize the pillowcases with "an avid reader sleeps here."

I am excited to see the love for reading grow as well as the faces light up with the reading incentives from this project.
