Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students have physical education every day, 5 days a week, for 43 minutes a day. Our goal in physical education is for these students to be moving 30 minutes! We run 2 to 3 times a week with "cardio" days! We are working on meeting the standards for our mile times.

We are a low income Title 1 school.

We have about 55% Hispanic, 30% Africa-American, and 10% Caucasian ethnic populations. We are also a World Relief School that makes up 5% of our population with students coming from Iraq, Iran, Africa, and Nepal. My students do not have the means for extra technology in their houses. When given the opportunity to use fitness equipment, heart rate monitors, or pedometers, I think they are getting an experiences that they would not have otherwise. My students are hard working, and are struggling because either cultural influences, hereditary composition, and economic household. In our community, we have had an increasing amount of child abductions, so the chance of our students going outside to play, or walking to the park have decreased! The time spent inside or watching television has increased. I am trying to do all I can to help my students! Thank you!

My Project

Our department gets a total of $300 a year for equipment. Our school has 800 students. Most of our budget goes to repairing or replacing any old or broken equipment. We do not have the funds to get new or exciting equipment to help our students prepare for a better future in the "wellness" area. We have "cardio" days 2to 3 times a week. They get 30 minutes of exercise a day. They should be getting over 60! They need to see how much activity, or how little activity they are getting at home. I would like for each of my classes to rotate weeks with the pedometers. They would be assigned a pedometer on a Monday, and they would turn it in the following Monday with a weekly log sheet of the steps they took. I am hoping that if the students realize they need 10,000 steps a day, they can see if what activities they are doing is enough to fulfill their needs. I am hoping it will teach my students to keep moving and find other ways to be active.

Childhood obesity is on the rise, as well as type 2 diabetes.

My students, given the economic and ethic/cultural backgrounds are at an extremely higher risk for these diseases. The more I can get my students to move, the better off they will be. They are not getting this information at home. I am all they have in educating themselves on how to live a healthy lifestyle. We have to prepare the youth today on how to be better educated adults of the future.
