Help Ms. Manuel

Spanish 4 students will learn about the experiences of Spanish-speaking migrant families (a growing population in our urban Pennsylvania city). When we read literature in Spanish, we discuss reading strategies that are transferable to reading in English. In this way, work to raise literacy level in Spanish consequently strengthens my students' reading in English. This helps students prepare for the rigor of challenging reading in college.

Students need to know how Spanish is relevant in their lives. Our city has a unique and growing Spanish-speaking population that exists almost invisibly. This unit on migrant families will raise awareness on their experience here in our city.

The book "Cajas de Cartón" by Jimenez is the perfect tool for teaching about the experience of migrant families. I will need 75 copies of the book for my students. Many of my students have low reading skills, so the audio CD would help with comprehension.

Reading "Cajas de Cartón" will open my students' eyes to their often invisible community members. While reading the book, I will be drawing the connection between reading strategies in English and reading in one's second language. This practice will strengthen their literacy skills in any language. Thank you for your consideration!
